MEET THE BALDER NEIGHBOUR OF THE QUARTER: MILLE PUTS COMMUNITY FIRST
When Mille and her boyfriend Simon moved into their two-bedroom apartment at Green Hills in Solrød in October 2022, they were the first to move into the stairwell. Since then, Mille has built strong friendships within the building and created a unique network among women with young children. That’s exactly why she’s now being honoured as this quarter’s Balder Neighbour.
In 2022, Mille and Simon moved into their home at Green Hills. A year later, their daughter Lillie was born. As Mille didn’t have a large social circle in the area – being new to the city – she and a friend decided to start a playgroup for local women and their children.
The two reached out to mothers on maternity leave and stay-at-home parents through Facebook. Very quickly, 10–12 mothers and their children from Solrød and nearby towns began meeting every Thursday in the shared community room at Green Hills. Mille provided coffee and freshly baked buns, creating a cosy and welcoming space for play, creativity, and connection.
“I didn’t know many people in Solrød, so I set out to build a local network. That became the start of some truly meaningful friendships – for both the adults and the kids,” she explains.
From community room to playgrounds and cookies
As the children grew older, the group began meeting at local playgrounds instead of indoors. Mille continued to take the lead in keeping the network active and vibrant.
One of the mothers who became a key part of the group is Camilla, who also lives at Green Hills and is the one who nominated Mille for the Balder Neighbour of the Quarter award. The two are now close friends and meet up regularly for playdates, workouts, and everyday moments of connection.
It’s clear that Mille has formed close bonds with many of her neighbours and actively fosters a sense of community both within the building and in the surrounding area.
“I love doing something kind for others and making people feel welcome here in our stairwell. Some of our neighbours recently had a baby, so I brought them some buns and cookies. It means a lot when you know your neighbours and can become friends with them,” Mille says.
A heartfelt way to close a chapter
Soon, Mille’s daughter will be starting nursery, and her time as a stay-at-home parent is coming to an end.
“This award is such a beautiful way to close a very special chapter. A chapter filled with new friendships and a strong sense of community. I feel deeply moved and honoured,” says Mille.
We send a big Balder thank-you to Mille for her open heart, genuine interest in community, and her remarkable ability to bring people together.
